Biscuits Does Digital Manipulating Graphic Designy... Type... Stuff

I took a photo of a weird concrete war thing on Sunday, and I did stuff with it (for want of a better phrase) in Photoshop. The first pic is how it looked (albeit with some changes to brightness etc.) and the second pic is what I did with it. I think it looks like something out of a post-apocalyptic computer game.

Then things got stupid and I started adding coloured skies with the cloud tool:

I especially like the ones with the skies that look toxic. A bit like something from the original Doom game.

on a geography trip my friend took photos but on some got her glove (which was red) over the corner of the lens, and the geography teacher thought there had been a toxic gas attack.

am liking them a lot buscuits :-) you could use them as threats.

Thanks Poppy! Ha ha, I like the thing about the glove, that sounds funny! Yeah, maybe I'll get some pictures of famous London landmarks, alter them so they look like they've been hit by some apocalyptic like disaster, and send them to the Government with a message saying: Dear Sir/Madam, I have digitally altered this photograph to show what it will look like unless you give me 3 millions pounds. But I just know I'll do something silly like forget to enclose my address of something. Although that would be silly because then they'd come and get me. Blimey, demanding money is more complicated than I realised. Maybe it's time to get PayPal.

I've been trying to post a comment about this for ages.

Very cool pics. I never understand how to do all the photo wizardry on the computer.

I still haven't worked out how to use the expensive SLR I bought.

SLR? er, ok. is there no instruction book? buscuits probably knows. or will find out for you.

You might find this helpful:

You can take better pictures if you use the manual function. I'm not completely sure about digital cameras (my digital camera is one of those really simple ones) but I should imagine that a lot of it would be similar to my good film camera.
With those you have to look at the light meter which is this thing that shows you how much light is coming in. You need to make sure its not too dark or too light (on my camera if its too light, it shows a plus, if its too dark, theres a minus.) So you have to adjust the camera to get enough light in. You do this by adjusting the aperture (which is the hole that lets the light in) and the shutter speed. The aperture is measured with numbers which have an 'f' before them.

The aperture changes the depth of field, which just means the bits that are in focus I think. If you have a large aperture (which confusingly is represented by a small f number) then the background will be out of focus, and the foreground will be in focus. If you have a small aperture (large f number) then a lot more or all of the photograph will be in focus. With shutter speeds, a fast shutter speed means you can catch whatever your taking the photo of quickly, like if you are taking a photo of somone running very fast they will come out quite clearly. If you use a slow shutter speed, they will be blurred as you will be keeping the shutter open as they move along.
If you are using a slow shutter speed, you'll need a tripod other wise everything will be blurry.

I had to look in my camera book for that, I can never quite remember the details. Tell me if that is any help or not.
